Whip It Good!: Making Whipped Shea Butter at Home - Your Ultimate Skin Savior

Three clear round jars filled with homemade white shea body butter, showcasing a luxurious skincare product for soft and radiant skin

Hey there! It's Tia, and I have a story to share with you. Long before Solomon and I created this business together, I've always been passionate about what goes into and onto my children's bodies. In this post, I want to take you on a journey through the origins of our whipped shea butter and how it became our family's go-to solution for itchy skin.

A Mother's Concern:

My oldest daughter, Lily, has always been blessed with "easy" skin. No sensitivities, no eczema, etc. However, when Lola was around 2.5 years old, she began experiencing uncomfortable itching. It got so severe that it interfered with her sleep at night. We tried everything – from unscented specialty lotions to oatmeal baths and even prescription topicals. But nothing seemed to provide lasting relief. Frustration set in and I knew I had to dig deeper to find a solution.

Exploring Natural Remedies:

Instead of relying solely on store-bought products or doctor's recommendations, I began researching the potential benefits of natural ingredients. Essential oils, which I had used for various purposes throughout my life, naturally caught my attention. My quest led me to discover the soothing properties of sweet almond oil, lavender oil, chamomile oil, and bergamot oil for itch relief and inflammation reduction.

The Birth of a Solution:

Armed with this newfound knowledge, I decided to create a whipped body butter for Lola, infused with these oils. The results were astounding. From the very first night, she experienced significant relief from itching. This marked the beginning of our family's journey into the world of whipped shea butter.

Sharing the Love:

Now, I'm excited to share this recipe with all of you. The base of our whipped shea butter is incredibly versatile. Without added oils, it's perfect for everyday skin needs or even hair care. With the infused oils, it becomes a powerful anti-itch remedy. Best of all, you can customize it to address your unique skin requirements or simply to add your favorite fragrance.

Safe for All Ages:

Our whipped shea butter is safe for individuals of all ages. I've created jars of this for everyone from newborns to seniors in their late 70s. It's a testament to the natural, gentle effectiveness of this homemade solution.

At BABY|MAMA, our passion for effective skincare solutions is REAL! Don't miss out – explore the recipe below, and stay tuned for the upcoming retail version, a fantastic addition to our collection!

Lola’s Shea Butter

Heated Phase

  • 80g Shea Butter
  • 10g Kokum Butter
  • 90g Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 10g Cetearyl Alcohol

Cool Down

  • 10g Constarch
  • 2g Vitamin E Oil
  • 2g Essential Oils (Bergamot, Almond, Chamomile & Lavender oils)

Method

  1. Measure out your heated phase ingredients: Shea Butter, Kokum Butter, Fractionated Coconut Oil and Cetearyl Alcohol.
  2. Combine ingredients in a heat proof container and gently melt over low heat using a double boiler.
  3. Once melted, take off the heat and allow to cool to room temperature before transferring to the fridge.
  4. Refrigerate the body butter until firm. Use a fork to test the consistency, if done the fork should be able to pierce through the center but it should not be liquid inside.
  5. Once set, you can move on to whipping the butter. Use an electric whisk to whip until the butter is aerated and forms soft peaks. The texture should be completely smooth and resemble whipped cream.
  6. Once the desired texture is reached, measure out the cool down ingredients: Constarch, Vitamin E Oil and the desired essential oils.
  7. Add the cornstarch first and whisk on a low speed to ensure that it’s thoroughly incorporated and there are no lumps. Then add the rest of the cool down ingredients and whip on high speed to create a light and airy whipped body butter.
  8. Store your whipped shea body butter in a tub-style container or glass jar, away from direct sunlight. The body butter will continue to firm up and will reach it’s final consistency in the next 24 hours.

This recipe makes 200g of whipped shea body butter, and will last for approximately 12 months.
